Regarding the upcoming seminar at the VTSDA, it’s all about building your ving tsun toolbox. In the morning, Sifu Matt Johnson will help you inventory the many tools available to us as outlined in the three empty-handed forms (siu lim tau, chum kiu, biu jee). In the afternoon, we’ll consider, in-depth, how to extract several of those tools from the form and put them into practical use for very serious self-defense and for use in chi sau tournaments. Space is limited so register now! https://mjvingtsun.org/pay-your-tuition/

New Student Begins Ving Tsun Journey
It’s always fun and exciting when a new student begins their study of Ving Tsun.
This was especially true this evening when Donald got started this evening. Donald’s uncle is the owner of the Chi Cafe in Chinatown, one of our very favorite spots to eat. They have terrific Hong Kong style food and are open till all hours. That means you can get late night congee any time you want!
Donald said he’s wanted to study for a while but between work and school, he had to wait until today.
Here’s what his first lesson looked like. (Pretty relaxed and friendly atmosphere, just like at the VTAA in Hong Kong.
First Sifu Matt taught him the opening to Siu Lim Tau…
Step by step, making little adjustments along the way.
Donald was focused all night and worked really hard.
It was easy to see how much he was enjoying learning at last.
The other students were glad to help of course. Humberto worked on punching with him.
Finally! Time to relax before heading out. Welcome to Ving Tsun, Donald! Glad to have you in the Matt Johnson Ving Tsun family.
Maybe you might want to try Ving Tsun too?

Stop Cell Phone Attacks with Ving Tsun
First, Pay Attention
First of all, you can stop this from happening by not walking around blindly unaware of your surroundings while chatting or texting. This kind of behavior makes you a prime target for attacks. If you notice in the video, in each assault, the victim had their complete attention on their phones and were not noticing anything about what was going on around them. For a predator, this is the same as being the lame, lone animal on the edge of the herd alone and vulnerable. Those are the animals who are attacked by bigger, fiercer animals whose only job is to hunt out their prey. Doesn’t sound too nice, does it? Maybe we should all think twice about walking around with our phones out. Sorry Apple! Put your iPhone in your pocket.
Second, Be Prepared to FIght Effectively
Dealing with sucker punches and surprise attacks is what Ving Tsun is all about. The likelihood of being attacked by a trained fighter is pretty slim. Ving Tsun is simple, effective and direct. It can stop an attacker as soon as the assault begins. Ving Tsun is easy to learn and in fairly short order, you can have the basic skills that can help keep yourself safer. Call and make your appointment today at the VTSDA. Don’t wait until you have already become a victim!
Stay safe, everyone,

Weekend Ving Tsun Training at the VTSDA
Suddenly I realize as I was downloading the photos you guys took today, I couldn’t help but hear that corny old Carl Douglas song, “Everybody was kung fu fighting….”
(Photos courtesy of Chris and Perla Kellner)
It was so great to spend the day teaching meditation and tai chi and then have lunch with the Ving Tsun family, including some of the Iowa branch. (even if you guys were a little bit sweaty after all your wing chun!)
Ving Tsun Self-Defense Applications
Here’s some great videos of training for an attack from behind.
Ving Tsun Self Defense
In the course of training tonight, one of the students asked a good question:
“Sifu, what happens when someone grabs you from behind like this?”
And so, the class went in a new direction…
Many thanks to the students who trained so hard and asked all the right questions… Enjoy the photos. Video on the way.
